Skype - a retrospective
Microsoft will close Skype forever tomorrow. Teams will take over. The discontinuation of Skype marks the end of an era, for some of us.
I was 16 when I first started using Skype. It was a sort of „upgrade“ from ICQ, more serious and more adult. I have been a user for more than half of my life. I still use skype, sporadically, to this day. Since finding out about its upcoming demise, other millenials I talked to seemed touched and at least slightly melancholic by this end.
I invite you to take a look with me at skype´s history – as usual through the data looking glass, but also through personal stories, taking a mixed approach to the end of skype: to help us understand why it may have been formative for large parts of a whole generation, and why it may have been time to say goodbye.
